Principal’s Message
This is the end of our second trimester. Teachers and students have been working very hard teaching and learning new content. All students were assessed and report cards will be sent home by Wednesday, March 10.

The third trimester marks the end of another school year and it usually comes very fast. April and May are packed with assessments and I can’t tell you how important it is for students to understand that these assessments are the way we educators have to know how much students have learned. In Spanish we say: “To know, is to be able to remember on time.” If we know something and we don’t remember when we need to remember, we can’t prove that we know.

I know that sometimes it feels that we are over testing your children, but if we think about it we as adults get tested all the time. We have to solve problems, make decisions and think on our feet all day long. We want our children to be ready to deal with a very complex world. They will have to make choices and maybe solve many of the problems some of our decisions have created for them. Having them practice how to take tests, prove their knowledge, and yes, make mistakes in a caring environment will give them the strengths they need to succeed anywhere they go.

Read–Aloud Time
I don’t know about you, but one of the most precious memories I have of my mother is the one where I am sitting very close to her enjoying the fresh smell coming from her beautiful, long, straight hair while she holds me tight to her side and reads a story to me. My favorite story is a very sad story about this girl who lost her mother and her father married a wicked woman that made her work very hard. After many years, I can still close my eyes and relive that moment. Reading aloud to our children can be a magical experience. Try to hold the book close to your child and help him/her see how you track from left to right taking your time and talking about the illustrations and interesting words you find along the way. Make predictions, change the story, have your child retell the story and create a new ending. All of these simple strategies will help your child develop vocabulary and comprehension skills. Do not stop reading aloud when your child learns how to read. Keep finding interesting books to share and keep building magical memories.
